Crafting New Experiences
Visiting Nishiawakura might require more active participation and involvement from you than other, more accessible places that are better catered for overseas travelers. However, we hope to give you more memorable stories, deeper connections with the locals, and a fuller heart to go home with.
Where nature and community come together
For visitors, Nishiawakura provides an authentic vision of how local community members live in harmony with the natural environment and insight into aesthetic ideals such as yo-no-bi (beauty found in modest and humble handmade items for everyday use) and wabi-sabi (a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete) that permeate Japanese culture.
With a welcoming ethos that values cross-cultural partnership, the village provides opportunities for interaction with community members. Visitors can connect with rice farmers and local artists and participate in workshops in crafting pottery, dyeing cloth with tree bark and wild plants, and creating Japanese confectionary.
